Kansas City Chiefs: Prospects to keep an eye on in 2020 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
The Chiefs continue to look to improve defense with a middle linebacker from out west.
A bit undersized at 6’3″ and 235 pounds, Evan Weaver at times looks like an old school middle linebacker on tape, certainly aided by the 89 on the jersey running around the middle of the Cal defense. It certainly appears like he can get stronger, which helps in his need to add bulk, but Weaver has been a tackling machine for the Bears program the past few seasons.
The Chiefs linebackers have left a lot to be desired in the past couple seasons, with Anthony Hitchens doing very little, Reggie Ragland becoming a free agent after this season and not likely to return, and Damien Wilson only being signed through the 2020 season. Depth is vital, and Weaver has experience supporting the run and attacking and blitzing the quarterback.
Evan Weaver has also shown an ability and comfort to work in pass coverage, albeit in limited opportunities. A developmental linebacker and a player that can contribute on special teams for the next four seasons is great value for a Chiefs team that not only needs to change some of the personnel on their defense, but a culture.
