Kansas City Chiefs: Prospects to keep an eye on in 2020 NFL Draft
By John McCarty
The Chiefs have an aging tight end and no depth at a position Andy Reid historically values. Depth and potential are needed.
Just recently, current starting Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce turned 30. This past season, he underwent major surgery on his ankle. His rookie season was derailed by a knee injury that required surgery.
After the 2019 season, Kelce is significantly more expensive to keep than he is to cut or trade. All are important factors to keep in mind.
Andy Reid, from his time in Philadelphia and here in Kansas City, values the tight end position. Jacob Breeland is an athletic tight end with experience lining up in the slot and ‘inline’ the classic tight end formation. Breeland has similar size (6’5″ and 250 pounds) to Kelce when he came out (6’5″ and 255 pounds).
Regardless, the Chiefs must address their depth at tight end. Blake Bell is more a third tight end at best and current third tight end Deon Yelder may not really be an NFL caliber player.
A good tight end can open options on the outside for receivers or simply convert first downs over the middle. The Chiefs have ignored this position for awhile; it’s time for it to stop.
