Byron Jones will likely will find himself on the free agent market in 2020. Will the Chiefs be a taker?

Byron Jones, depending on how the 2019 season plays out, could be the top option at corner for the Chiefs this offseason. With good size, the fifth year veteran is still young enough for some of his best football to be in front of him and been around enough he should be able to step in and contribute and make a difference right away.

  • After having a big season that included a Pro Bowl in 2018, can Jones follow up that season with another solid season on the outside? The Cowboys spent big money on running back Ezekiel Elliott and are also likely to fork over a massive paycheck to quarterback Dak Prescott.

Assuming he hits the market and the Chiefs coaching staff believes Jones can fit in the Chiefs scheme, he likely should be the top target for the Chiefs in free agency this offseason. The only concern, just how much money would the Chiefs need to pay Jones to come play at Arrowhead?

Former Giant and now Saints corner EliApple could hit market and could perhaps be an intriguing name to follow

Eli Apple is a former top pick that likely hits free agency depending on what the Saints do at other areas, including at quarterback. Apple’s play since entering the league has been okay, but has not been spectacular. Last season, he was traded from New York to New Orleans.

An interesting caveat could be the history between Apple and current Chiefs defensive coordinator Spagnuolo. While Spagnuolo was the interim coach in New York, Apple was suspended a game by the staff and there was a division between Landon Collins and Apple.

Having coached (and suspended) Apple and the past, the Chiefs are a in a solid position to address whether Apple is worthy of a spot on the Chiefs roster.

Apple certainly fits the bill as a former first round pick that may not cost all that much and is still young; Traits Brett Veach finds attractive in trades and free agency. I will be curious to see if anything happens here should Apple hit the market after the season.
