Free agency could be an area that the Kansas City Chiefs are able to address depth at cornerback after years of limited activity at position

As of current, the only cornerbacks on the Kansas City Chiefs roster now that are under contract for next season are second year player Charvarius Ward and rookie sixth round selection Rashad Fenton. That’s it.

Bashaud Breeland, Kendall Fuller and Morris Claiborne are all set to be free agents at the conclusion of the 2019 campaign. That is not ideal for anyone involved.

The Chiefs will obviously need to do something this offseason after years of not really doing much at corner. We take a look at a few potential options that could be available this offseason for the Chiefs.

Jimmy Smith of the Ravens could be an intriguing option if he hits the market after 2019.

Older than perhaps at least I’d prefer at 32 and currently has yet to see the field this season due to injury, Jimmy Smith is a solid cornerback with years of NFL experience. At 6’2″, he has the size and length the Chiefs appear to favor in their outside corners  along with the ability to play up towards the line.

While it certainly appears the possibility that Smith’s best football is behind him, the veteran could provide a short-term boost to the defensive backfield, assuming his medicals check out. There are concerns about his ability to stay on the field, as best seen by him not yet seeing the field this season.

After spending big money in free agency this past offseason, including money on Earl Thomas, will the Ravens be interested in bringing back the veteran corner? He could be an interesting name to follow if he’s allowed to hit the market.
