Through the first four weeks, fans have been wowed with some great showing by KC Chiefs players on their way to an undefeated start. Who have been the best newcomers to this point?

Some members of the Kansas City Chiefs have been by the usual suspect: Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones have all been their stupendous selves. Meanwhile there’s been other players who have seen breakout roles from last year like Demarcus Robinson and Darrel Williams.

Beyond these known commodities, there are a number of new contributors who have quickly carved out important roles on the team. Whether it’s with flashy plays, great leadership, or even just solid stats, new players have found a way to make their mark all over the field.

So let’s take a look at the five best newcomers to the Chiefs through the first quarter of the season. For this list we are going to look at how the player came to the Chiefs, what they’ve done so far, and how they project moving forward.

NUMBER FIVE – TYRANN MATHIEU

Tyrann Mathieu was one of the two major additions to the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason along with Frank Clark. Like Clark, Mathieu was made one of the wealthiest players at his position to come in and be the leader of the new look Kansas City defense, and like Clark, Mathieu’s contributions so far has been a bit underwhelming.

Mathieu came in with a reputation for making big plays, but has yet to force a turnover or even make much of a contribution in coverage. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t had some success though. Mathieu has had 15 tackles on the season and a huge sack last week on Mathew Stafford that gave Kansas City the ball back.

He has also been the leader of the defense to this point playing in all defensive snaps the last three weeks. Although his performance has been far from perfect, he is steadily playing better and is absolutely an upgrade at safety than what the Chiefs had last year.

Tyrann Mathieu has been decent to this point, but with his best football still in front of him, look for the Honey Badger to climb this list as the year goes on.
