Shortstop

Adalberto Mondesi is a game changing star at shortstop if he can stay healthy for an entire season. The Royals front office should make every attempt for the next couple of offseasons to sign Mondesi to a long-term contract.

Mondesi offers incredibly disruptive speed on the base-paths and exceptional power to potentially put together 40 doubles, 15 triples, and 20 home runs at his peak. If Mondesi ever finds plate discipline and continuous health he could be in contention for the best shortstop in the game. Nicky Lopez offers a solid option at shortstop in the event that Mondesi sees extended time on the injured list.

2020 offseason transactions: None

  • Future: Clay Dungan (ETA: 2022), Bobby Witt Jr (ETA: 2023), or Jeison Guzman (ETA: 2023)

Bobby Witt Jr. is the future at shortstop if Mondesi isn’t signed to a long-term contract. Clay Dungan and Jeison Guzman offer potential alternatives at shortstop.

Guzman had a spectacular playoff performance leading the single A Lexington Legends to the South Atlantic League championship. Guzman hit .375/.444/.667 in the championship run for the Legends. Guzman has the chance to be an average everyday big leaguer.
