Kansas City Chiefs first-quarter woes continue

For the second game in a row, the KC Chiefs started slow. It wasn’t until the second quarter that the good guys got things going on offense. There’s no need to worry about this though because the Chiefs have the best offense in the league and the Ravens have one of the best defenses in all of football.

When the Chiefs offense gets going, no one is going to stop them. Thankfully for the Chiefs, they play the Lions next week and that’s a team that isn’t in the same tier as the Ravens or even the Raiders in terms of defense.  Look for the Chiefs to score early next week and keep the offensive firepower going throughout.

Regression?

All Chiefs fans have heard during the offseason is how Patrick Mahomes is going to regress. If this regression, Chiefs fans can’t wait for him to progress.

So far, Mahomes has more yards and a better completion percentage than he did this time last year. Sure he has three fewer touchdowns but still. He is doing this while playing two of the top defenses in the NFL and without his best receiver in Tyreek Hill.

He looks better mechanically and is only going to continue to get better.  Patrick Mahomes looked great against the Ravens, throwing for over 300 yards for the 13th time in his career.  That passes Kurt Warner for the most in a quarterbacks first 20 games.

Keep in mind that Warner already had some pro experience in the AFL before he moved to the NFL, so this is unprecedented.

Defensive Improvements

While it may not have looked like it, the Chiefs defense played a good game. Lamar Jackson is one of the most elusive players in the NFL and Mark Ingram is extremely hard to bring down.  Yes, there were tackling issues on Ingram and Jackson, but most defenses will have these issues.

The Chiefs forced Lamar Jackson to play quarterback and it worked in the end. Most of Jackson’s completions were of the checkdown variety and a couple of his long throws were heaves and prays.

The Chiefs defense also dropped a number of interceptions as well, but that is why these guys play defense and not offense. Overall, I am quite happy with the way the defense played against a growing offense that has put up a lot of points so far this season.
