The Kansas City Chiefs’ cornerback situation is iffy. They could sure use a corner like Miami’s Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Consensus is hard to find in any sport. Consensus best teams, best players, best coaches, etc. There is almost always differing opinions and thoughts. That is part of what makes sports so great, especially football.

Statistics, analytics, context, the eye test, all of it makes for compelling and diverse arguments. That is why consensus is rare. If there is one consensus across the football landscape, and especially across Chiefs Kingdom, it is that the Kansas City Chiefs are in a desperate need for an upgrade at cornerback.

All offseason, fans speculated what the Chiefs were going to do about the secondary. The team got off to a good start by signing players like Tyrann Mathieu and Beshaud Breeland. Then things got a little wonky.

Both Darqueze Dennard and Ronald Darby visited the Chiefs, and both players left 1 Arrowhead Drive without a contract. They then both returned home and signed back with their previous teams. The Chiefs also had corner Jason Varrett scheduled for a visit. That visit was then canceled as Varrett signed with the 49er’s. No worries, right? We still had the draft, after all.

Leading up to the draft, Chiefs fans were buzzing on potential corners in the first and second rounds. Guys Like Byron Murphy, Rock Ya-Sin, and Greedy Williams sat on the top of fans’ wish lists.

The air was taken right out of those ideas when Brett Veach traded away our first round pick for Frank Clark, then used two second round picks on receiver Mecole Hardman and safety Juan Thornill. In fact, Kansas City only selected one corner in the draft; sixth round pick Rashad Fenton.

Fast forward to present day, and the Chiefs still need corner help. Check Chiefs Twitter, and you’ll find articles daily highlighting potential targets on the trade market. Usual suspects Xavien Howard, Patrick Peterson, and Xavier Rhodes usually highlight those lists. Despite this speculation, all has been quiet on the Chiefs’ end.

Or has it?

Veach has been quietly busy working his cap magic. Eric Fisher and Anthony Hitchens both restructured their deals. After those two moves, the Chiefs were left with roughly $24 million in cap space, and that even accounts for Tyreek Hill’s extension numbers. Veach wanted to be ahead of the game and be prepared in case one of the top corners on the market became available.

Guess what? That is exactly what happened. During the Panthers/Bucs Thursday Night Football game, Twitter ignited with speculation second year defensive Minkah Fitzpatrick was granted permission to seek a trade.

The first thing Kansas City fans do when they hear a corner becomes available is dream about acquiring him. Then they may ask, “would he help the team?” The short answer? Yes. The long answer? Hell yes.

This is a move that would fit the Veach model PERFECTLY. I am here to tell you just why you should be pounding your chests for Minkah Fitzpatrick. Lets break it down, folks.
