Kansas City Chiefs dominant on offense in week one victory vs Jaguars
The Kansas City Chiefs are 1-0 after putting an absolute beatdown on the Jacksonville Jaguars in the season opener.
There isn’t much to gripe about when the Kansas City Chiefs beat a potential playoff team in the season opener. That’s just what happened on Sunday when the Chiefs strolled into Jacksonville and didn’t let the hot temperatures or the hot temper of the Jaguars slow their offense down.
The Chiefs won it 40-26 and Patrick Mahomes had 300 yards passing in the first half alone. Sammy Watkins showed when he’s healthy, he’s still more than capable of being a WR1, as Tyreek Hill missed most of the game due to an injury and Watkins took advantage, grabbing nine catches for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
It was one of those days for the Chiefs offense.
As for the defense, they didn’t look great, but ultimately held Gardner Minshew (Nick Foles was injured in the first quarter) and the Jags offense to 26 points in what became a blowout. The Jaguars only had 19 points until late in the game when they managed to find the end zone again to make the score look a little more respectable.
The highlights on defense included a Bashaud Breeland fumble recovery, a Frank Clark interception, and an Emmanuel Ogbah sack. Alex Okafor should have had a pick-six, but couldn’t haul in the pick.
At the end of the day, the Chiefs defense surrendered over 300 yards through the air (close to 300 for Minsew alone) and over 80 yards rushing. It’s safe to say the Jaguars would have had more rushing yards had the game not gotten out of hand.
Mahomes was electric in this game, but he was knocked around quite a bit and at one point, gingerly walked off the field and had to be looked at in one of those goofy blue tents. He ended the day with 378 yards passing and three touchdowns while not throwing a pick or getting sacked.
Rushing attack wise, LeSean McCoy was the star of the running back committee, totaling 81 yards on the ground in his Kansas City debut. Damien Williams only had 26 yards rushing, but found the end zone once.
While this was a nice win for the Kansas City Chiefs, there’s a lot that needs to improve moving forward. The defense is worrisome, allowing 300 yards passing to a backup rookie quarterback (though to be fair – they didn’t game plan for Minshew) and allowing some guy named DJ Chark to get 146 yards through the air.
All in all, however, it’s hard to be too upset with this game. The Chiefs dominated on offense from start to finish and you love to see that for sure, especially for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
