KC Chiefs: Tyreek Hill extension smart decision for organization
The KC Chiefs have locked up star wide receiver Tyreek Hill on a three-year $54 million extension. This is a smart move for the Chiefs as they vie to win the Super Bowl in the 2019 season.
Given the off field situation over the offseason, it was still to be determined if Tyreek Hill would get the pay day that was discussed prior to the situation. Now the Kansas City Chiefs have decided on a giving him the money and over the next three years making him one of the top paid wide receivers in the league.
This contract makes Tyreek Hill the fourth highest paid wide receiver yearly in the NFL at $18 million per year. He falls just behind Brandin Cooks ($27.4 million), Michael Thomas ($21.6 million), and Mike Evans ($20 million).
It had been discussed that all training camp that Hill’s agent and Chiefs GM Brett Veach had been in attendance with one another and that a possible extension was just around the corner. It looks as if the Chiefs feel safe enough to invest in Hill even with a troubled past.
The money shows that the Chiefs value Hill very much on this roster and believe he is worth top talent money. The years they have put into this contract also let us know how big of window Kansas City maybe seeing for his talents and abilities before he starts to decline.

This is a great deal for the Chiefs to make at this point in the franchise.
With Mecole Hardman being drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, he allows the Chiefs to see what they have in him in him over the next four year until both his and Hill’s contracts expire. The Chiefs will then have the chance to either re-sign Hill or let him walk and renew Hardman’s contract moving forward.
On the other end of the spectrum, this makes things more interesting in the contract front for Kansas City, as they still have other big names on the roster who are needing to be paid as well.
The lingering issue with Chris Jones getting his money is most concerning. Jones could make upwards to Aaron Donald type money if he continues to produce consistently and get better each year. Other notable names looking for an extension in KC are guys like Kendall Fuller, Demarcus Robinson, Darron Lee, and Reggie Ragland.
The other looming question is when will Patrick Mahomes get his big payday. He is going to need plenty of cap space to fit in a sizable number that could make him the highest paid in the NFL and numbers close to the $200 million range.
What happens over the course of this year and how other players play out their contract years will put a lot of weight on the Chiefs front office and force them to make some big investments and decisions.
As the season is just now getting started, the upcoming off season will be very interesting.
