Kansas City Chiefs: Predicting results of every game in 2019
Week 6 – Kansas City Chiefs vs Houston Texans (Matthew)
Rolling into week six of the regular season, the Houston Texans come to Arrowhead Stadium for
the first ever regular season match-up of Patrick Mahomes vs. Deshaun Watson. Watson brings in a 14-8 career record and an 0-1 record against the Chiefs as Houston’s starting quarterback. His first and only meeting came in the 2017 season in which Kansas City won by a score of 42-34.
Accompanying Watson is a group of weapons the Chiefs defense will need to shut down in
order to control the game. Star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who led in nearly every
receiving category during the 2018 season, is Watson’s number one target and the biggest
threat to the Chiefs secondary.
Alongside Hopkins are deep threat receiver Will Fuller, shifty slot man Keke Coutee, and newly acquired running backs Duke Johnson and Carlos Hyde. Not to mention Kenny Stills, who the Texans acquired from Miami not long ago.
Across the line of scrimmage is the 12th ranked defense during the 2018 season that was
headed by All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt. The Texans are stacked inside the box with players
like Zach Cunningham, Whitney Mercilus, and Benardrick McKinney which led them to a top five run defense last season.
Falling in behind the front line is a defensive secondary that fell in the bottom five statistically
during 2018. Having lost a big piece of their defense to the Chiefs (Tyrann Mathieu), Houston
will be relying on former Cleveland Brown and Jacksonvill Jaguar Tayshaun Gibson to fill his
shoes. The only other new face showing up in the secondary for the Houston Texans is rookie
Lonnie Johnson Jr, a physical corner drafted in the second round out of Kentucky.
PREDICTION: The Chiefs defense starts to gel and settles in for its second week in a row. Watson gets his shots in but adjustments in the fourth quarter slow down the passing attack for Houston. With the running game stalling out, Andy Reid dives into his bag of tricks to pull out the win.
Chiefs 27, Texans 24
STANDOUT PLAYER: Harrison Butker knocks down a 47 and 52 yard field goal to tie the game and take the W.
