Fantasy Football 2019: Thursday Night Football Start Em, Sit Em Week 1
By Kole Berrey
Sit of the Week: Mitch Trubisky, QB, Chicago Bears
This one is pretty simple; the Packers should have an improved defense, two of Mitchell Trubisky‘s top weapons are banged up, and he doesn’t have enough upside to pass over other quarterbacks potentially on the waiver wire. Matthew Stafford week one against the terrible Cardinals defense is a much better match-up, and he is available in every league outside of the greater Detroit area.
This may be an important time to talk about fantasy vs reality.
Above, I said you should start Tarik Cohen because of his receiving potential. Here, I am telling you to sit the very guy who is throwing those passes. The fact of the matter is, especially in PPR leagues, targets matter.
Cohen is probably going to be heavily utilized in the passing game because the Bears need him to be. That means screens, tap passes, crossing routes, etc, to get the shifty back into space. That leads to volume. In fantasy, empty stats are just as good as efficient stats.
My biggest issue here is I am a believer in the Packers revamped defense as a whole. The Packers added Adrian Amos at safety to pair with rookie Darnell Savage, who I was a major fan of heading into the draft.
The additions of Preston and Za’Darius smith at linebacker were good offseason moves as well. Even though I think Montgomery can find running room because of the loss of Mike Daniels, the passing defense on the back end should limit what Trubisky can do.
Trubisky is an intriguing option in fantasy because of his rushing ability. He is a sit here for me because he won’t do enough week one to overtake some other potential waiver wire pick-ups. If you have a stacked team, and need a steady 14 points, by all means, go with Trubisky.
But if you are trying to maximize your quarterback spot because you have a weakness in another area, avoid the Bears quarterback week one.
