Running back position battle

One surprising development between the first and second preseason games was the waiving of Josh Caldwell. Last week he was mentioned as a guy that may have jumped himself into the conversation to make the 53-man roster with a great preseason game against Cincinnati, but despite the great game, he was surprisingly cut.

The biggest development during the game revolved around Carlos Hyde. He opened up the game looking really good on the first two drives and then he had a fumble. There is a lot of talk about Hyde not making the roster due to his lack of explosiveness. If he really is on the roster bubble, this does nothing to help his cause.

The one thing he does have going for him though is that Tremon Smith is not showing anything at the running back position. Smith would be the next guy in line for Hyde’s spot.

Would they keep him solely based on speed and versatility? That remains to be seen, but this is the second week in a row that the running back position is being talked about as a big position battle to keep your eye on and that should continue to be the case throughout the rest of the offseason.

To end on a positive, rookie Darwin Thompson looked great again. Bouncing outside for a couple of first downs and then even running between the tackles for a third first down were things that stood out for Thompson.
