The KC Chiefs’ second preseason game didn’t go quite as well as the first. The defense looked better at times, especially the first string guys, but the offense was only able to put up one touchdown in a 17-7 loss.

A big part of the Kansas City Chiefs offensive struggles had to do with turnovers. They lost three fumbles on the night, which really inhibits the ability to put points on the board. The first fumble ended Patrick Mahomes‘ last drive, the second set the Steelers up on their side of the field late in the first half, and the third was in the Chiefs’ red zone. None of which are ideal.

The good thing is that the even in a loss the defense did look better. Charvarius Ward and Alex Okafor stood out early on when the first string was playing. Ward had a pass breakup to end the Steelers first drive and Okafor sped around the edge for an early sack as well. Ward also recorded an interception later in the game just before half time.

After the first-stringers, Tanoh Kpassagnon is the next guy that stood out. He had a good tackle on a run play where he pushed his blocker in to close a hole and then shed the blocker to tackle the running back for no gain.

He also showed tremendous closing speed running toward the quarterback who had rolled out near the sideline, which ended up as a near sack. Unfortunately, the quarterback made a good decision and threw the ball away.

Now let’s get to the three position battle observations for this weeks preseason game.
