FANTASY FOOTBALL SLEEPERS TO TARGET IN 2019

NUMBER 8 – RASHAAD PENNY

Rashaad Penny is the classic case of potential over production. Seattle was a predominant running team last year, and Penny was buried as the third running back on the depth chart behind Mike Davis and Chis Carson. Davis has since departed to Chicago, leaving Penny in a prime position to showcase some of the abilities that made him a former first round pick.

Penny was only afforded 85 attempts in his rookie season. His most carries in a single game was 12 in week seven against the Rams. That game also turned out to be his best as a pro, as he had 108 total rushing yards and a touchdown. His yards per carry that day? A whopping 9.0.

How did Penny follow up? Well, he didn’t have a chance. He was given eight carries versus the Packers the following week, which resulted in 46 rushing yards. His yards per carry was still a fantastic 5.8 on the day. Penny only received double digit carries twice all season, and that should change in year two.

As mentioned above, Mike Davis is gone. Davis accounted for 112 carries for Seattle last year. Expect Penny to absorb a lions share of those. Incumbent Chris Carson already had 247 attempts as the starter, so adding any more could add unwanted tread on his tires.

Penny is talented enough to do some work with an extra helping of touches, and expect this back field to be much more 50/50 on who gets the rock going forward.

Running back committee is three words fantasy owners usually never want to hear. Rashaad Penny is due more carries by default this year, and volume is a huge part of the fantasy equation. Penny has an ADP of #75, which is round nine in standard eight-man leagues. That is incredible value.

If Carson misses time or if Penny outright wins the starting job, he becomes RB1 in a run heavy offense. If he stays second on the depth chart, he still is a player who can consistently give you some production with the potential too have big days mixed in.

The value is there, and fantasy owners should look to make a move on him a little earlier than he is going in some leagues right now. Don’t overdraft, but if he falls to you, he has potential to pay off down the stretch,

Recommended Target Draft Range: Round 8-9
