Kansas City Chiefs: Assessing 2019 Offseason
By Kole Berrey
Good Moves: Firing Bob Sutton/Hiring Steve Spagnuolo, Signing Alex Okafor, Opening cap space for future moves.
Bob Sutton needed to go. I actually am in the minority that believes Sutton still has good coaching in him. But much like when Andy Reid went 4-12 and got fired by the Eagles, Sutton just needed a change of scenery and a fresh start to get back to his blitzing roots.
Alex Okafor is the type of signing that goes unnoticed almost all year by national media, but he will provide solid, consistent play on the defensive front. Expect him to play an Allen Bailey type role, which will endure him to Chiefs fans early.
Even if I didn’t like cutting Justin Houston just to sit on the cap space, I do agree with the trading of Ford and cutting of Eric Berry. My only qualms is that the team could have picked between Houston and Berry to keep on the roster, and gave it one more try.
Even if they had nothing left, the front office could cut them later in the year or next season. Still, the Chiefs sit around $25 million in cap space, which will allow them to get involved in any trade talk, sign any surprise free agent cuts or extend our own guys in the future.
