Kansas City Chiefs: Assessing 2019 Offseason
By Kole Berrey
The 2019 offseason was a crazy one for the Kansas City Chiefs. Let’s break it down bit-by-bit, shall we?
We are so close people. The wait is almost over and football season is almost here. The Kansas City Chiefs reported to training camp over the weekend, and it is almost time for real football. Before we get there, though, let’s take one last look at the offseason.
Now that all the dust has settled, we can look at every move with a full perspective. Remember when the Chiefs cut Eric Berry and Justin Houston? Everyone was up in arms about the state of what was already a terrible defense. KC’s pass rush was their strength, so without that, the defense was set to be even worse in 2019, right?
Well enter Frank Clark.
Remember when the Chiefs released long time safety Eric Berry? Enter Tyrann Mathieu and Juan Thornhill (and almost Earl freakin’ Thomas.) It is apparent now that Brett Veach always had a plan, and every move was made with the intention of executing it.
I will go on record saying that to me, this is the best offseason Veach has had as a general manager. He sometimes got too much credit for being the scout that initially pounded the table for Mahomes.
I really still needed to see it from Veach heading into this year. He needed to make the team in his vision. He did just that this offseason.
With that being said, there are some moves I loved, but others that I wasn’t a huge fan of. Here, I’ll explore both ends of that spectrum, and detail the good and the bad. At the end, I’ll assign an overall grade on how the Chiefs did leading up to the 2019 season.
