Nebraska Football: Huskers jump back into contention in 2019
By Cullen Jekel
November: Purdue, OPEN, Wisconsin, at Maryland, Iowa
The Purdue Boilermakers are turning things back over to quarterback Elijah Sindelar in 2019. Sindelar will keep this squad competitive as they battle to reach another bowl game under head coach Jeff Brohm, now in his third season, but against Nebraska, Purdue loses.
The Huskers follow up that victory with their second open week in four months. Solid scheduling right here, though I’m sure they prefer that over what happens to Michigan State between October 19 and November 2.
In that window, the Spartans have an open date, host the Penn State Nittany Lions, and then have another open date. I image that would frustrate a young team trying to get into any sort of a rhythm.
After Nebraska’s second open week, they take on the Wisconsin Badgers in a very important match-up. The Huskers may very well win this home game, which would essentially lock up the top spot in the Big Ten West.
Yet, I’m picking the Badgers. It will definitely be close, a classic Big Ten back-and-forth affair, but the Badgers will be just a little better on this day and have had Nebraska’s number since the Huskers joined the Big Ten.
Nebraska immediately rebounds with two victories to close out the regular season: on the road against Maryland, and then home against Iowa.
That Maryland game looks like it could be a trap game, but again, I’ve got faith in Frost that his teams going forward will avoid such shenanigans. Hosting Iowa will be a tougher match-up, but with outside shot at winning the division on the line, the Huskers show up and grab their ninth victory of the season.
