MUST WIN GAMES IN 2019

Week 14: Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots, 3:25 Kickoff (CST)

Come on. Could any other game take the top spot? The Chargers rivalry? Sure. Texas and Colts as strong playoff teams? Maybe.

But the number one spot was always going to go to the Patriots. They are the kings of the castle. The Golden Standard by which everyone also tries to emulate. The perennial team representing the AFC in the Super Bowl. Tom Freaking Brady. Darth Belichick. This may very well be the game of the year.

  • I don’t really need to tell you why this is important. When you are going up against a team that has made it to eight(!) straight AFC title games, then you know it is the ultimate litmus test. The Chiefs lost to this team last year in the regular season in what was one of the better games of the entire 2018 season, but still managed to grab the one seed.

Don’t expect that happen two years in a row.

To be honest, this is less of a must win from a tiebreaker stand point and more a must win from a legacy standpoint. Forgot about seeding and home field advantage, and think about the great game of football.

The best moments don’t happen in Week 7 against two 1-6 teams. They happen in games like these. The Chiefs HAVE to prove to themselves that they can beat the Patriots, in Foxborough.

There has to be a bad taste in the mouth of the Chiefs players and coaches. They were one offside penalty away from going to the Super Bowl. They had the greatest dynasty in the NFL, maybe even sports history, on the ropes. They won’t get many more chances at knocking down Goliath.

Andy Reid needs a Super Bowl. Going through Belichick is just the type of moment that makes this game so great. Mahomes is attempting to start his own legacy as well. He one day wants to be able to claim the title of “Greatest Quarterback we have ever seen.”

There will always be that “well, but…” if he never goes through Brady and company to do it. The rest of the squad, however, needs the win from a mental standpoint. Beating Brady at home in December is just the kind of confidence booster that can energize a roster. This is the prime opportunity to grab a win.
