Other observations from the opening weekend of camp

  • D’Montre Wade could be a sleeper for the 53-man roster. He was getting in a lot of time with the first-team defense after Bashaud Breeland‘s thumb injury and he even had an interception on Saturday.
  • Daniel Sorensen, who many had as a potential surprise cut (including me), has been running with the first-team defense as the starting safety alongside Tyrann Mathieu.
  • Kendall Fuller has been playing pretty much exclusively in the slot right now, but with the rest of the cornerbacks not looking particularly impressive, you have to think this will change eventually. The defense did look better as a whole on Sunday though and the offense does have an advantage when not in full pads, so maybe the cornerbacks aren’t as bad as we think.
  • Breeland Speaks still looks huge and is still mainly stuck on the second-team defense. Also as mentioned above with Chris Jones, no signs of switching to defensive tackle.
  • Cameron Erving seems firmly behind Andrew Wylie at left guard as of now, playing mostly with the second unit. The left guard spot may not be as much of a competition as we originally expected.
  • Coach Spagnuolo continues to impress with finding time to work individually with his players. He spent one on one time with Darron Lee, Matthieu, and Fuller each on Sunday.
