KC Chiefs: Five things Patrick Mahomes must do to retain MVP
Coming off of a stellar sophomore campaign, Patrick Mahomes is now a household name not only to KC Chiefs fans, but to the entire NFL. How can he follow up his MVP season with another MVP title?
Taking over the starting job for the Kansas City Chiefs last year, Patrick Mahomes was walking into a franchise that was ready to take the next step into the postseason and he did just that. After finishing the season with multiple awards, including NFL’s top honor (MVP), Mahomes will be looking to retain his status as the top player in the league.
Let’s take a look at some of the hurdles Mahomes will have to clear to repeat as Most Valuable Player in the National Football League.
TOUCHDOWN/INTERCEPTION RATIO
Opening up the 2018 season, Mahomes came out firing throwing for 14 touchdowns and no interceptions in his first four games. It wasn’t until week five against the Jacksonville Jaguars that he gave up his first pick of the season.
Mahomes went on to shatter Chiefs previous passing touchdown record (30) held by form Chief great Len Dawson. Finishing the season with 50 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions, Mahomes had a ratio of 4.1 to 1 and averaged at least three touchdowns per game.
Keeping this ratio a constant will be a huge factor in the next season and building on another successful MVP type season. Having a season under his belt and more game film out on him, Mahomes will have to adjust to being adjusted to.
