After the Madden 20 ratings were released on Monday, there were a lot of player ratings to debate all across the league. One of Madden’s biggest mistakes, especially as far as KC Chiefs players go was Sammy Watkins’ low rating.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins received an 82 overall as his initial Madden 20 rating. This seems a little low for the level of talent that Watkins possesses and it looks almost laughably low when comparing his rating to some of the players around or above his rating,

There are 42 other wide receivers who are rated at an 82 or higher. No way are there 42 other wide receivers in this league that are equally or more talented than Sammy Watkins. Watkins has had an injury-riddled past, so that’s fair to have his injury rating low, but outside of injury, he should be ranked much higher.

So, let’s take a look at some of the players rated higher than him: Demaryius Thomas, Mohamed Sanu, Tyrell Williams, Cole Beasley, Kenny Stills, Nelson AgholorDeSean JacksonMarquise Goodwin, Corey Davis, Will Fuller, Taylor Gabriel. That’s a list of some of the players that Watkins believe it or not, is rated lower than.

Let’s just do a quick break down of why this list is a failure.

  • Demaryius Thomas will be 32 this year and is coming off the worst season of his career.
  • Sanu has been a career wide receiver two/three and never amassed 1,000 yards in a season.
  • Tyrell Williams is another career number two or three option who only had about 100 more yards and two more touchdowns than Watkins last season in six more games.
  • Beasley is 30 years old, much less talented, and has never reached 1,000 yards receiving.
  • Stills has, for the most part, been a wide receiver too, is much less talented than Watkins, and again has never hit the 1,000 yard mark.
  • Agholor has yet to reach his potential or the 1,000 yard mark.
  • Jackson may have been better in his prime, but not at age 32.
  • Goodwin has just as much or more injury concern as Watkins with less production when healthy.
  • Corey Davis started to reach his potential last year, but not enough to put him ahead of Watkins yet.
  • Fuller has more injury concerns than Watkins with less production.
  • Gabriel may be faster, but isn’t as good and doesn’t produce near as well as Watkins.

That was a lot I know, so let’s simplify it a little.

How many of those guys would the Chiefs rather have than Watkins? More than likely zero. Since we are talking in Madden terms, if you requested to trade any of these guys straight up for Watkins in Madden Franchise mode, the response would be “The Chiefs are not interested. Make a better offer.”

Now, it has already been established that he is rated way too low, but here is a complete look at his ratings anyways:

Overall: 82

  • Awareness: 88
  • Speed: 91
  • Acceleration: 91
  • Agility: 88
  • Strength: 67
  • Elusiveness: 87
  • Ball Carrier Vision: 92
  • Juke: 91
  • Spin Move: 88
  • Catching: 87
  • Catch in Traffic: 83
  • Spectacular Catch: 87
  • Release: 82
  • Jump: 87
  • Short Routes: 83
  • Medium Routes: 85
  • Deep Routes: 83
