RANKING AFC WEST BACKUP QUARTERBACK SITUATIONS

NUMBER 1 – LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

The best backup quarterback situation in the AFC West goes to the team who hasn’t seen a quarterback other than Philip Rivers start a game since 2005. Rivers has been the most durable signal caller in the game since he took over the starting role in 2006.

Because of that, the Chargers typically don’t gift Rivers with a reliable backup. Normally it’s rare for even the most diehard of fans to be able to name the Bolts backup, but this year, the name is a pretty well-known one: Tyrod Taylor.

Things didn’t work out for Taylor in Cleveland and he wound up signing with the Chargers to sit behind Rivers in 2019. Taylor spent three years as the starter in Buffalo and his best year came in 2015 where he threw for 3,035 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Taylor is also good running with the ball, tallying 568 yards and four rushing touchdowns in that 2015 season. He probably won’t see the field in 2019 due to Rivers’ durability, but this is still a nice situation to have. If Rivers were to miss time, Tyrod Taylor could come in and help keep the Chargers afloat if need be.

LA also has Cardale Jones and rookie Easton Stick on their quarterback depth chart, in case you were wondering. Taylor should be the favorite to win the backup job.
