KC Chiefs: Ranking every backup quarterback situation in AFC West
The KC Chiefs clearly have the best starting quarterback in the AFC West, but what about at backup quarterback? Who has the best backup signal caller in the division?
The backup quarterback has become a very important position over the last few years. We’ve seen guys like Chase Daniel (former Kansas City Chiefs backup) land massive deals to stand on the sideline holding a clipboard (well, probably an iPad or something similar these days). That’s because if the starter goes down, your team is in trouble unless they have a reliable backup to takeover.
As of now, the Chiefs have Chad Henne as the backup to Patrick Mahomes for the 2019 season. Henne didn’t see the field during the regular season until week 17 when the game was already out of hand in KC’s favor and the Chiefs opted to pull Mahomes so he didn’t get injured.
While Henne won’t be handed the backup job, he’s the most experienced group on the depth chart to be QB2. What do the other AFC West backup quarterback situations look like heading into 2019? This post will look at all of the other quarterbacks on the divisional opponents’ depth charts and simply ranking their situations.
RANKING AFC WEST BACKUP QUARTERBACK SITUATIONS
NUMBER 4 – OAKLAND RAIDERS
The worst backup quarterback situation in the division belongs to the Oakland Raiders.
Fans of the silver and black should REALLY hope that nothing happens to Derek Carr because if he were to go down for an extended period of time, the Raiders would have to rely on… Wait for it…
Mike Glennon or Nathan Peterman. That’s right. Glennon and Peterman are the only other quarterbacks on Oakland’s roster and will be battling it out for the QB2 spot this upcoming season.
Glennon is on his fourth team in four years after things not panning out for him in Tampa Bay, where he was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The Bears for some reason thought it was a good idea to pay Glennon a ridiculous amount of money for doing next to nothing. He made just four starts before being benched in favor of then-rookie Mitchell Trubisky.
As for Peterman, his journey in the pros has been much worse. Drafted by the Bills in the fifth round two years ago, Peterman made four starts over the course of two years and threw just 548 yards, three touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. That same guy could be Derek Carr’s backup in 2019.
Raiders fans should hope that Carr remains healthy in 2019 because otherwise, they won’t be winning many games. Not that they will even with a healthy Carr. Zing!
