INTRIGUING DRAFT PICKS – MICHAEL MASSEY, 2B (ILLINOIS)

With the 109th pick (fourth round) in the 2019 MLB Draft, the Kansas City Royals selected Michael Massey, a second baseman out of the University of Illinois. This is a solid pick, mainly because Massey fits the mold of what the Royals strive to be.

For starters, he’s a second baseman, which before Whit Merrifield and Nicky Lopez came along, was a position that was tough for the Royals to find talent at. Even though Massey is listed as a second baseman, he’d probably be more like Merrifield in the sense that he’d provide versatility for the team.

According to Lamar’s article on Royals Review (linked on the first page), Massey is…

"High-contact, low-power infielder with defensive acumen to be a utility guy"

Doesn’t that fit the Royals to a tee? He puts the ball in play, doesn’t hit for power, and can play multiple positions. Sounds like a winner in my book.

Hopefully Michael Massey can become something in the Royals farm system because utility guys are proving to be more and more important each day for this organization.
