Timing of the Kansas City Royals’ prospects and free agency could portend a significantly longer rebuild than anticipated.

The Kansas City Royals are currently mired the depths of another disastrous season that has the ball club barreling towards another 100-loss season.

After finishing the 2018 season with 104 losses with the second worst record in baseball (resulting in holding the second overall pick in this year’s draft), the Royals are on pace to finish right where they were at last season. In fact, through 55 games, the 2019 edition of the Royals are 18-37. The 2018 version was 19-36.

Making the situation concerning isn’t so much the record, bad teams lose baseball games, to which they receive high draft picks and can find high caliber players that will help restore the glory.

No, the problem is the players on the roster currently producing may not be Royals by the time reinforcements arrive. Free agency and age may very well rob the Royals of an opportunity to compete before they ever get the chance.
