ROYALS TOP FIVE PICKS IN MLB DRAFT

2007 – MIKE MOUSTAKAS (SECOND OVERALL)

The Royals held another top-five pick in 2007 and took Mike Moustakas with the second pick. Moustakas was a shortstop at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth, California, but as we all know, the Royals would eventually use him as a third baseman.

Moustakas got off to a slow start in the majors and for a while, it was brutal to watch him try to hit the ball. In 2015, however, Moustakas got it going and made his first All-Star Game that year after batting .284 with 22 home runs.

Moose’s best year as a Royal came in 2017 when he broke the all-time single-season home run record (he had 38 that year) and batted .272. Many thought Moustakas was going to get a boatload of money on the free-agent market, but that didn’t happen for the beloved Royals third baseman.

Instead – Moustakas wound up re-signing with the Royals on a one-year deal. He was flipped at the deadline in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he spent the 2019 season as well. He’s currently a member of the Cincinnati Reds, as of February 2021.

While Mike Moustakas got off to a slow start, he absolutely was more than worthy of the second overall pick in 2007.
