Round 2, Pick 44

Selection: Isaiah Campbell, RHP, Arkansas

Others Considered: Kendall Williams, RHP, IMG Academy (Fla.)  & David Wendzel, 3B, Baylor

In the second round, it could come down to three very different players: a collegiate pitcher out of the SEC, a high school pitcher from Florida, or a college hitter from the Big XII.

The player I have the Royals zeroing in on is Isaiah Campbell, MLB Pipeline’s 45th ranked prospect. The 21-year-old redshirt junior by way of Olathe, Kansas, “plays up thanks to the steep downhill plane he creates with his 6-foot-4 frame and high-three-quarters delivery.”

That keeps his fastball between 91-95 MPH with it topping out at 98 MPH. He also relies on a slider, splitter, and curve. According to MLB Pipeline, Campbell’s ceiling looks to be that of a number three starting pitcher.

Kendall Williams, 18, is even taller than Campbell, measuring 6-foot-6. Currently he’s committed to Vanderbilt, but could certainly bypass the Commodores should whatever team that drafts him meet his bonus demand. Right now, his heater is around 91-92 MPH to go with, as Granger noted, “three playable secondaries.”

Then there’s David Wendzel, 22, currently manning the hot corner for the Baylor Bears. The 6-foot, 205-pounder is slashing .377/.488/.623 for a 1.111 OPS to go along with 17 doubles, eight home runs, and 39 runs batted in. He’s struck out just 35 times compared to 27 walks.

The former 37th round pick of the Boston Red Sox is MLB Pipeline’s 47th ranked prospect. As noted by MLB, Wendzel “has played nearly everywhere on the diamond for the Bears in games or fall practice and might even be able to handle catching, giving him some intriguing versatility.”
