Kansas City Royals: What to expect in the 2019 MLB Draft
By Cullen Jekel
What will the Kansas City Royals do with the number two pick?
It can change obviously, but as of now I think Bobby Witt Jr. (SS, Colleyville, TX) will be the pick at no. 2. As the son of a major leaguer, he’s been a high profile guy for so long and seems to be un-phased by the spotlight. I’ve watched over 50 plate appearances over the last two years and he’s continued to improve his hitting approach, and really every facet of his game. He’s a plus runner who hustles everything out. He’s a smooth, instinctual defender with a plus arm capable of making every throw at shortstop. And he’s got above average power that shows up in games.
If there’s a question in his game, it’s around the hit tool. Personally, I’m not concerned given the strides I’ve seen him make over the last 24 months. The bat speed is there, he has an awareness of the zone, and his pitch recognition is improving.
Is there any chance they take a player other than Adley Rutschman or Bobby Witt Jr. at number two?
Yes, I think there is a chance they take someone other than Rutschman or Witt at no. 2. I’d put Vanderbilt outfielder JJ Bleday and Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn as the next most likely candidates for that spot.
