Kansas City Chiefs: Post-Draft 53-Man Roster Prediction
By Shade Piper
Cornerback
Made the Cut: Kendall Fuller, Bashaud Breeland, Charvarius Ward, Keith Reaser, Rashad Fenton, Tremon Smith
Notable Snubs: Mark Fields, Jalin Burrell
The top three cornerbacks for the Chiefs are pretty much set in stone. These three guys who have a chance to be solid, but Ward is still a question mark with limited playing time last season. This leaves the Chiefs with a smaller question mark in their top three and then a bunch of big question marks after that.
Not a great place to be in. This is a big reason why Chiefs fans have been so relentless with their Patrick Peterson pursuits.
One player I really struggled with leaving off the 53-man roster is Mark Fields. It may be a little early to predict this, but I actually am more excited about Fields than Fenton. So don’t be surprised if he sneaks onto the 53-man roster. If he does, he would likely be taking Smith’s spot instead of Fenton’s though.
As you can see, Smith is on my predicted 53-man roster instead of Fields. This is because, with all the questions surrounding Tyreek Hill, the Chiefs may want to keep Smith on the roster for another return man. He has the physical tools to be a good corner, so if he comes into this season a much-improved player he could easily keep his spot.
Safety
Made the Cut: Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, Armani Watts, Jordan Lucas
Notable Snubs: Daniel Sorensen
The top four at safety seem to be pretty much set. The only other scenario I could see happening is the Chiefs having five safeties and Sorenson being that fifth player. The top four, barring anything crazy happening, should all have their spots on lock and it would be shocking, to say the least, if any of these guys end up not making the 53-man roster.
Shocking things do happen during offseason cuts though, so not all hope is lost for Sorenson. His experience and veteran presence could enable him to hang onto a roster spot, but that means either a shocking cut of one of the top four safeties or depth at another position must be cut down.
It seems more likely that Sorenson has played his last game in a Chiefs uniform.
