Roster Hole: Offensive Line Depth

Available Free Agent: Marshall Newhouse

As I wrote in the section about John Sullivan, while the Kansas City Chiefs have depth at the offensive guard position, it looks a little questionable. To boot, according to Piper’s prediction, the Chiefs will be exceedingly thin at offensive tackle. There is no solid depth behind starter Eric Fisher or Mitchell Schwartz.

Marshall Newhouse could provide depth to both the guard and tackle positions.

During his eight-year career in which he’s played for the Packers, Bengals, Giants, Raiders, Bills and Panthers, Newhouse has played at least left tackle, left guard, and right tackle. In that span, he’s appeared in 114 games and made 72 starts. As of now, the former fifth-round pick out of Texas Christian University in 2010 remains a free agent.

While Newhouse definitely won’t push Fisher, Schwartz or Tardiff for starting time, he could push Andrew Wylie at left guard. And he would be a much safety back-up for both guards than would be McKenzie, who’s never played a down of professional football.

Here’s an incredible video of Newhouse, then with Oakland, recovering a fumble. It…didn’t end well.
