Roster Hole: Defensive Tackle Depth

Available Free Agent: Corey Liuget

Taken with the 18th pick by the old San Diego Chargers in 2011, Liuget only played in six games in 2018 due to a PEDs suspension and then a season-ending injury in Week 11. Before last year’s aberration, Liuget had appeared in 102 games (100 starts) since 2011.

For his career, Liuget has 24 sacks, 275 combined tackles, 59 tackles for loss, 20 pass deflections, five forced fumbles, and 53 quarterback hits.

He just turned 29, and yet remains unsigned.

His addition would improve the depth of an area in which the Chiefs look very strong. According to Piper’s prediction, the Chiefs will go with Chris Jones and Derrick Nnadi at defensive tackle with rookie Khlalen Saunders and third-year pro Justin Hamilton backing them up. Veteran Xavier Williams is also currently on the roster.

Jones is, of course, a no-brainer. The former Mississippi State product is a superstar in the making after collecting 15.5 sacks last season. But outside of him, it’s more promise than anything along the interior defensive line.

Nnadi played well last year, but has only 11 career starts. Saunders has been dubbed The Aaron Donald of the FCSbut this is the NFL we’re talking about. And Hamilton hasn’t done much. As currently structured, I agree with Piper that Williams is the odd man out.

Yet, that still leave something to be desired: a quality veteran to pair with Jones from time to time when Nnadi needs a spell. Or to replace Jones, Nnadi or Saunders in case of an inevitable injury.

That quality veteran is there for the Chiefs’ taking. And he played last season for their biggest divisional threat.
