The KC Chiefs have one of the best tights in the NFL (if not THE best) yet there’s been some light buzz about them potentially trading for Kyle Rudolph, another stout tight end. This move would make the Chiefs offense even scarier.

Before we dive in, I want to make it known that there hasn’t been anything official linking the Kansas City Chiefs to trading for current Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph. The reason I’m writing this post is because it was announced on Friday that Rudolph and the Vikings have broken off any extension talks moving forward (see tweet below).

Well, you know how it goes in the offseason, folks. Any time there’s news about a player potentially being traded, you start thinking about what it’d take to get that player to land with your team.

That’s what Chiefs fans have been doing since the news of an extension not happening surfaced.

Again, there’s been nothing official linking the Chiefs to Rudolph, but let’s say there was. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have both him AND Travis Kelce suiting up for the Chiefs at the tight end position?

It’d be reminiscent to what the Patriots did at the tight end spot during the early 2010s. For those who don’t remember those days – what they did with their two tight ends was a lot of fun to watch and tough for the opposition to stop.

Rudolph has been with the Vikings ever since they drafted him in the second round back in 2011. He’s racked up 3,787 yards and 41 touchdowns during his eight-year career in Minnesota. His best season came in 2016 when he totaled 83 receptions for 840 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Chiefs need a better backup option at tight end. That’s nothing against Blake Bell, but he’s spent five seasons in the league and four of them have been with different teams. He’s a decent third string option, but the Chiefs need a better TE2, especially in their contending window.

Say Travis Kelce were to miss an extended period of time (knock on wood please). How much better would Chiefs fans feel about their situation if Rudolph was the TE2 and not Bell? The answer is A LOT better.

Now – What exactly would it take for the Chiefs to land Rudolph if they opted to go that route? 610 Sports Radio tweeted out a poll asking if fans would be okay with surrendering a 2020 third round pick in order to obtain Rudolph’s services. They note that he’s set to make $7.5 million and has been a reliable target the last few seasons.

The Kansas City Chiefs are in “win now” mode and if Brett Veach really believes that Kyle Rudolph could put this team over the top, perhaps he’d be willing to give up that third round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

This would be a fun move by the KC Chiefs. They don’t HAVE to do it, but if they did opt to acquire Rudolph, they’d be getting themselves another stealthy tight end to pair with Travis Kelce, and game planning for that would be difficult, giving the Chiefs another huge advantage offensively.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Would trading for Kyle Rudolph be something you’d want to see happen? If so, is a third round pick in next year’s draft a fair trade?
