Kansas City Chiefs: UDFA’s Signings That Stand Out
Mark Fields, Cornerback (Clemson)
The Chiefs have struggled with finding cornerback help since they sent Marcus Peters to Los Angeles via trade last spring. Mark Fields is a speedy guy, clocking a 4.3 40-time at the combine and really made a name for himself at the Senior Bowl.
He’s battled injuries and was mostly stuck in a reserve role for the Clemson Tigers the past two seasons. However, he flashed his brilliance against the Alabama Crimson Tide in last years National Championship game.
Fields doesn’t add much length to the position, as he stands at just 5’10”, but he could be a guy who contributes on special teams right away. The Chiefs, for whatever reason, did not value corner as high for the second draft class in a row and are making up for it in depth during this period of free agency.
Fields has potential to be a nice nickle corner with his speed and skills in Steve Spagnuolo’s new look defense.
Fields ultimately has to prove he can stay healthy, but for this guy to climb his stock the way he did at the combine and Senior Bowl, it’s kind of a boss signing for the Chiefs out of the UDFA period. Let’s hope he pans out to be another diamond in the rough!
