After not having any picks in the fourth or fifth round, the Kansas City Chiefs finally were on the clock at pick 201. They used that selection on cornerback Rashad Fenton out of South Carolina.

The Kansas City Chiefs needed to address the cornerback position in this year’s draft and while it took them until the sixth round to do so, better late than never, right?

Rashad Fenton was the Chiefs’ selection and the four-year Gamecock probably won’t be a starter in the secondary (barring injuries to starters), but he could be a decent depth piece.

Fenton had 122 total tackles, 19 defended passes, and five interceptions throughout his four-year collegiate career. Three of those five interceptions came last season and forcing turnovers is something the Chiefs did quite well last year, so let’s keep that tradition going.

The Chiefs signed Bashaud Breeland this offseason and also have Kendall Fuller and Charvarius Ward at the cornerback spot. Tremon Smith will also be entering the second year of his career and now has a full season of NFL play under his belt, which is worth noting.

NFL.com pegged Fenton as an undrafted free agent, so some might say the Chiefs reached with this pick, but if they liked him, then hey… Why not take him? At this point, teams are looking to add depth and Fenton can be just that for Kansas City.

He also has experience as a kick returner, so that could come into play too, perhaps.

So far, the Chiefs have mostly fixated on the defensive side of the ball, but they spent their first pick in the draft on a wide receiver. After that, they grabbed a safety, defensive tackle, and now filled the cornerback spot with Rashad Fenton.

It’ll be interesting to see what kind of role Fenton plays in year one with the Chiefs, but here’s to hoping this pick is looked at as a steal down the road!

What do you think of this pick, Chiefs Kingdom?
