Kansas City Chiefs bolster offensive line depth with Nick Allegretti

The Kansas City Chiefs had the second pick in the seventh round and used it on Illinois offensive guard Nick Allegretti. Yay, backup offensive lineman!

No one is going to jump for joy over an offensive lineman being chosen by their favorite team, but hey… We’re late in the draft and at this point, you’re just hoping the picks make the team come August.

Nick Allegretti was the 216th overall pick and he’s joining the Kansas City Chiefs and providing depth to their o-line.

NFL.com’s draft profile on Allegretti noted that he should be in an NFL training camp this summer. That should most definitely be the case here.

The Chiefs don’t have a pressing need along the line, but it’s a taxing position. We saw a lot of the line get banged up quite a bit last year and that’s why you always want to have a DEEP offensive line.

Allegretti spent time at both guard and center and that just so happens to be where the Chiefs need the most depth at along the line. Austin Reuter is taking over center duties after Mitch Morse signed with Buffalo, and the two guard spots are currently occupied by Cam Erving and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.

This won’t be a pick that Chiefs fans will pump their fists over, but Allegretti was a team captain and consistent starter for the Fighting Illini. His ability to play multiple positions is definitely something to keep an eye on because he can be plugged in at a few different spots and that comes in handy, especially when the injuries start to pile up.

Offensive linemen are the unsung heroes in the NFL, but the Chiefs need to make sure their franchise quarterback is protected for years to come. Here’s to hoping Allegretti becomes a draft day steal!
