RANKING EVERY FIRST ROUND PICK IN CHIEFS HISTORY

NUMBER 13 – PATRICK MAHOMES

Some might have expected to see Patrick Mahomes higher than 13th on these rankings, but what hurt him in the end was that he’s only played one full season. It just so happens, however, that in his first season as a starter in the pros, Mahomes won the freaking MVP award, the first Chief ever to win the distinguished honor.

Mahomes became a Chief when the franchise traded up 17 spots to draft him in the 2017 NFL Draft. They still had Alex Smith at the time, but fans expected that they were getting ready to move on from Smith and a first round quarterback appeared to be in the cards for the Chiefs.

Fortunately, Mahomes was the choice, and after spending his rookie year holding a clipboard and learning from Smith, he finally got a chance to show his stuff in the regular season finale in 2017. Mahomes led the Chiefs to victory and the Chiefs obviously felt he was ready to be a full-time starter, as they traded Smith to the Redskins that offseason.

Mahomes gave Chiefs Kingdom hope in 2018, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first year under center. He made left-handed throws, no look passes, and wowed NFL fans everywhere with his long ball ability.

Mahomes could easily climb on this list, but with just one full year of starting experience, it didn’t seem fair to put him ahead of Hall of Famers, let alone Chiefs Hall of Famers.
