Kansas City Chiefs: Ranking every first round pick in franchise history
RANKING EVERY FIRST ROUND PICK IN CHIEFS HISTORY
NUMBER 19 – JEROME WOODS (John)
Drafted as a safety in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft, Jerome Woods was a member of the Chiefs for ten years, playing in nine seasons and enjoying a solid career with the Chiefs. Along with second round pick Reggie Tounge, Woods was a solid safety and even returned kickoffs early in his career.
Eight spot after Woods was selected, the Patriots selected Lawyer Milloy from Washington and he would enjoy a strong career and potential Hall of Fame. Woods was solid, but his career does not stack up to Milloy.
The Chiefs defense during the Dick Vermeil era could have looked much different with star play from a safety as opposed to the average Woods. That being said, the defensive defenses during Vermeil’s run were front seven and not Woods related.
NUMBER 18 – DWAYNE BOWE
With the 23rd overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs addressed offense and selected Dwayne Bowe out of LSU. Bowe is a prime example of one of those players who we didn’t realize how good his numbers were until he was long gone.
In his eight years with the Chiefs, Bowe put up over 1,000 yards receiving in three of them. The first came in 2008 with Tyler Thigpen (of all people) as his quarterback. Bowe also had over 1,000 yards receiving in 2010 and 2011 with Matt Cassel and a plethora of other guys throwing to him. Even in the horrendous 2012 season, Bowe managed to grab 59 passes for over 800 yards.
Where the Chiefs went wrong with Bowe was giving him that massive contract as soon as John Dorsey got to town (a bad contract by Dorsey? Never!). Bowe failed to live up to that deal and was let go after failing to haul in a single touchdown in 2014 (though in his defense – no other wideout grabbed a touchdown either).
Bowe finished his eight-year Chiefs career with 532 receptions for 7,155 yards and 44 touchdowns. He’s third all-time in receiving yards for Kansas City.
**As much grief as Chiefs fans gave Bowe during his time here, he really was a great player.**
