First Round Options Who Have Visited or Worked Out for the Chiefs.

L.J. Collier, EDGE (TCU)

The Chiefs seem to be looking for strong bull rush type of defensive ends and L.J. Collier definitely fits that mold. Collier’s visit with the Chiefs clearly shows their interest, so now the only question is what type of pick would they have to use on him. Collier is “quietly pushing for the first round” according to Ian Rapoport, so it’s looking like he may be in the running for the 29th overall pick.

Please God no is all I can say about this. I would want no part of Collier as a first round pick. He only played one season as a starter at TCU and seems like a bull rush only type of EDGE. Collier doesn’t have the size or athleticism to warrant a first round selection. He does play aggressively and uses his strength well though, so he could have good value as a second round selection, just not at pick 29.

  • Jeffery Simmons, Defensive Tackle (Mississippi State)

Defensive Tackle is not really one of the bigger holes in the Chiefs defense. Because of this, I hadn’t even considered an interior defensive lineman in either of my first two Chiefs Draft Boards. However, the Jeffery Simmons visit has me excited. While it may not be the biggest positional need, this would still be a very exciting pick for the Chiefs.

Simmons has the strength and athleticism to be a top of the first round draft selection, but off the field concerns mixed with frequent less than ideal instincts on the field has slid him to a late first round draft projection. If Simmons is available at 29 and he is the best available player on the board this would be a very pleasing selection for the Chiefs.

Have you ever thought about how great it would be if the Chiefs could clone Chris Jones? If so, this would basically be your dream come true. Simmons has a lot of similarities to Jones and having these two pressure from the interior would be a nightmare for opposing offensive lines.

Jerry Tillery, Defensive Tackle (Notre Dame)

Jerry Tillery, like Simmons, plays at a position that is not necessarily considered a huge need for the Chiefs. Also like Simmons, however, Tillery has enough talent to still be a great first selection for the Chiefs. A Chris Jones-Jerry Tillery combination would be incredibly difficult to contain as well. One downside to Tillery is that the Chiefs may have to trade up a few picks in order to draft him if he’s their guy.

There are a lot of similarities between Tillery and Simmons, so why not add one more? Like Simmons, Tillery’s main concern has nothing to do with his on field production. Tillery was caught stepping on and kicking opponents early in his college career, which could be concerning to teams who potentially draft him, but that’s what these pre-draft visits are for. If the Chiefs aren’t concerned that this will be an issue Tillery could be a great option at 29.

Out of the two, I actually like Simmons’ upside a little more than Tillery’s, but both guys are beasts and would be great selections. However, if a great talent is available at a position of bigger need the Chiefs should go with the bigger positional need.
