The 2019 NFL Draft is just a few weeks away and all sights are set on the young talent coming into the league. While the storm of free agency has calmed, the Kansas City Chiefs are keeping their eyes on the best available free agents.

Let’s take a look at who the Kansas City Chiefs could pick up before the draft later this month.

Tre Boston

Major changes have happened this offseason with the Chiefs defense. Replacing defensive coordinator Bob Sutton with Steve Spagnuolo meant a switch from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3. The personnel changes have been as swift as the scheme change.

It was no secret that a position that needed a lot of attention was the secondary. All-pro safety Eric Berry was released just days after signing former Cardinals and Texans safety, Tyrann Mathieu.  The Chiefs let starting cornerback Steve Nelson walk and brought in Bashaud Breeland.

Even just this last week, safety Eric Murray was sent to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for defensive lineman, Emmanuel Ogbah. Needless to say, then, the safety position is something that Kansas City will need to address in the draft or through free agency. Of the free agent safeties still left, one of the younger and more talented players is Tre Boston.

Boston doesn’t have a lot of accolades to his name, but he seems to be one of the more regarded names at the position. While he may not be one of the league’s top safeties, he’d be a definite upgrade to a position with a lot of uncertainty beyond Mathieu. Thankfully, the Chiefs have a little more freedom with the salary cap to make something happen here.

Boston may not be the answer beyond 2019, but he could help at least for a season. While younger safeties Armani Watts and Jordan Lucas develop, Boston could aide in their development while bringing some talent to the field.

The Chiefs may elect to let the smoke clear from the draft if they’re even interested in Boston, but signing him before would help to reinforce a defense in need of help.
