Kansas City Chiefs: Future of backup quarterback position
By Chris Clark
CHASE LITTON
In previous seasons, it wasn’t uncommon for the Chiefs to carry four or five quarterbacks between their practice squad and active roster. In 2018, they only carried three total, with Chase Litton being third on the depth chart.
Litton went undrafted in the spring of 2018, but signed with Kansas City in early May. The 6’6″, 230-pound quarterback definitely had the size to play at the NFL level, but did he have the ability? He must have shown the Chiefs something in the preseason games to be chosen as QB3 over veteran Matt McGloin.
To McGloin’s credit, Litton was certainly a cheaper option when trying to save money against the salary cap. But that also doesn’t mean that Litton didn’t show more than McGloin did during that preseason. After all, McGloin was cut and Litton was cut before being added back to the practice squad.
With only practice squad reps, it’s hard to tell what Litton’s ability really is at the NFL level. Andy Reid can often get more out of a quarterback than most would expect and Litton could be in a great position to be such a quarterback. As it sits, Litton looks to maintain the QB3 place on the depth chart, but there is competition on the horizon.
