My 2019 Dream Draft

  • Round 1, 29th Overall: Deandre Baker, Cornerback (Georgia) (or Murphy/Williams if available)
  • Round 2, 61st Overall: Chase Winovich, EDGE (Michigan)
  • Round 2, 63rd Overall: Charles Omenihu, EDGE/Defensive Lineman (Texas)
  • Round 3, 92nd Overall: Josh Oliver, Tight End (San Jose State)
  • Round 5, 167th Overall: Terrill Hanks, Linebacker (New Mexico State)
  • Round 6, 201st Overall: Erik McCoy, Center/Guard (Texas A&M)
  • Round 6, 214th Overall: Bryce Love, Running Back (Stanford)
  • Round 7, 216th Overall: Andrew Wingard, Safety (Wyoming)

This draft would round out the KC Chiefs roster well. The Chiefs need to go with a cornerback, EDGE, and defensive tackle or safety with their first three picks. In this draft, they get an great cornerback, an excellent EDGE, and then a very versatile defensive line/defensive end combo in their first three picks.

  • I went with a tight end pretty high. This could be a surprise to some fans, as Josh Oliver would be just a backup tight end. Even playing behind Travis Kelce though, Oliver would come in and make an immediate impact as a receiver. The Chiefs really need a replacement for Demetrius Harris and Oliver will not only be a replacement, but an upgrade at the position.

I went with a project linebacker in the fifth round. That pick could probably be used on someone with a chance to have a more immediate impact, but I think the upside to Hanks as a coverage linebacker is worthy of this selection. While he might not impact the defense right away, he could step in and make an impact on special teams.

In the sixth round, I started off with adding some depth to the offensive line. Tackle is the biggest need on the offensive line for next season depth wise, but most of the guys on the offensive line are pretty versatile anyways, so any depth at offensive line should be serviceable. Grabbing a lineman who could play center would be smart with Austin Reiter being in his first year as a full-time starter at center.

With the second pick in the sixth round, I drafted Bryce Love to address the running back depth. Love would be a solid addition to the backfield that would have potential to be a quality starter in the future. An additional year to get healthy and learn under veteran Carlos Hyde could be the best case scenario for Love as well.

I didn’t really address free safety in this draft, but I have a lot of faith in Jordan Lucas and Armani Watts. I instead went for a hard-working strong safety that would be a cheap replacement for Daniel Sorenson. Tyrann Mathieu is also so versatile that any depth at the safety position will suffice.

The only position that needs depth that I didn’t address is the wide receiver position, but I am still holding out hope that Jordy Nelson is a possibility there. If not, Byron Pringle and Sammie Coates are currently on the roster and should be able to fill the last wide receiver spot.

This would be a great overall draft for the Chiefs. In this draft, the Chiefs would get a few potential steals and most of their depth needs would be addressed. This isn’t just a dream scenario either, all of these picks seem to be a legit possibility.

Chiefs fans should be very happy if the Chiefs went with some of these players during the 2019 NFL Draft.
