KC Chiefs: Moving on from Dee Ford and Justin Houston right move
By Kole Berrey
Draft Assets
Just like it is a great year to need defense in free agency, the same could be said for the draft as well. This draft class seems to be stacked on defensive talent, especially at the pass rush position. Some players, like Alabama’s Quinnen Williams, won’t even be in play for the Chiefs.
If the Chiefs are able to trade Dee Ford and/or Justin Houston though, that would recoup at least some assets to give Veach the flexibility to maneuver around the board and draft a blue chip prospect or two. Remember, the Chiefs also have an extra second round pick to play with from the Marcus Peters trade with the Rams last offseason.

Most people will be screaming Veach to use the Chiefs first pick on a cornerback, which very well may be what they do. If a talent like Ed Oliver is still there, Veach shouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger.
It is entirely possible Oliver is off the board way before the Chiefs have a chance to even sniff at him. Dominant performances at the Combine by other defensive linemen and pass rushers could push him down far enough to make Veach start to entertain a trade up, especially if he has a few other picks in his pocket to play with.
If Oliver is gone, then the Chiefs can just swing at one of the many other intriguing prospects that this draft offers. Much like it’s a good year to have money to spend, it’s also a good year to have as many picks as possible in a loaded draft class.
More picks translates to more chances to hit on a prospect, but what exactly could the Chiefs get for their two premium pass rushers? Would it be enough to justify getting rid of two players who helped the Chiefs pace the league in sacks last year? The answer is probably.
