2019 NFL Mock Draft: KC Chiefs address secondary with first two picks
ROUND 3: PICK 28 (92ND OVERALL)
Travis Kelce is as good as it gets at the tight end position, but with an offseason surgery expected to occur and the fact that he’s the only reliable tight end on the roster, it makes sense to add one in the 2019 NFL Draft.
KC grabs a tight end early and the guy they land played his college football just two and a half hours away from our lovely city. Kendall Blanton of Missouri is the pick.
Blanton’s stats aren’t anything to write home about (he had 22 receptions for 177 yards and two touchdowns last year), but he was a decent blocker in the passing game. Having a franchise quarterback means that protection is even more important now than ever, as you want to protect that investment.
Blanton might not be a threat down the field as a tight end, but if he can take some of the blocking duties off of Kelce’s hands, that gives the number one tight end more opportunities to make big plays.
While I’m all about drafting a tight end, this year’s class is really good and it felt like the Chiefs reached a bit with this selection. Blanton never showed much in the receiving game and he was an “okay” blocker at best. Sometimes reaching on guys pays off, so hopefully that’d be the case with Kendall Blanton.
