Kansas City Chiefs: Re-Drafting biggest misses of past decade
By Cullen Jekel
Draft Class: 2013
Player Drafted: Nico Johnson, Linebacker, Alabama, Round 4, Pick 99
Re-Draft: David Bakhtiari, Offensive Tackle, Florida State, Round 4, Pick 109
Nico Johnson only lasted 18 games in the NFL over three seasons with three different teams. In six games (one start) with the Chiefs his rookie season, he collected seven tackles. And thus concluded the Nico Johnson Era in Kansas City. He’d later appear in games for the Bengals (16 tackles and one fumble recovery in 11 games) and the Giants.
Ten picks after the Chiefs selected the Crimson Tide linebacker, the Packers went with a Seminole offensive tackle, and he’s still playing in Green Bay today. David Bakhtiari has started every game in which he’s played since being taken with the number 109 pick in 2013.
He made the Pro Bowl in 2016 and was voted All-Pro this past season. An anchor on Aaron Rodgers’ line, the Packers rewarded him with a four-year extension worth north of $50 million in 2016.
2013 was, of course, the year the Chiefs took Eric Fisher with the number one overall pick in the draft. And rightfully so. However, of the Chiefs five starting offensive linemen that season, Fisher is the only one who’s been with the team every season since then.
Gone are Branden Albert, Rodney Hudson, and Jon Asamoah. (Of those three, only Hudson remains in the league.) Guard Jeff Allen is back with the Chiefs after a stint with the Texans.
Bakhtiari, meanwhile, has been a solid, consistent starter for the Packers since day one.
