Kansas City Chiefs: Re-Drafting biggest misses of past decade
By Cullen Jekel
Draft Class: 2009
Player Drafted: Javarris Williams, Running Back, Tennessee State, Round 7, Pick 212
Re-Draft: Captain Munnerlyn, Cornerback, South Carolina, Round 7, Pick 216
There were several misses in 2009 draft, which was Scott Pioli‘s first with the team. While, despite the lack of production, Jackson still looks like a solid pick at number three, Pioli arguably missed on his third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-round picks, and then two of his three seventh-round picks.
No wonder they went 4-12 the following season.
It’s the first of those three seventh-round picks that hurt the most. The Chiefs, who at the time had Jamaal Charles and Larry Johnson on the roster, took a flier on running back Javarris Williams. Williams would all but wash out of the league after his rookie season, in which he carried the ball six times for six yards.
Meanwhile, four picks later, the Panthers selected South Carolina’s Captain Munnerlyn, who’s still playing today, and currently sits as one of the league’s top available free agents.
He’s played in all but six games since being drafted, suiting up for Carolina on two different occasions with the Vikings tucked in there for three seasons. In that time, he’s intercepted 12 passes, taking five back to the house, while collecting a total of 522 tackles and ten sacks.
The Chiefs should rue the day they passed on Munnerlyn back in 2009. Perhaps they can amend that this offseason.
Some other notables:
- The Chiefs passed on offensive tackle T.J. Lang in the fourth round in favor of corner Donald Washington.
- In the third round, a miss that stings: with the 67th overall pick, Kansas City selected defensive end Alex Magee over both defensive end Michael Johnson and linebacker DeAndre Levy.
