Heading into the offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs will likely look to address and help their weak safety position. Could help come in the form of Bears safety Adrian Amos?

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking at addressing a defensive backfield that, weak before, is likely no better with the potential departure of cornerback Steven Nelson and the continuing questions surrounding Eric Berry and his ability to get on the field. In another offsesaon that could possess a variety of options at safety, a name not mentioned nearly enough is Adrian Amos of the Chicago Bears.

Spotrac.com calculates the value of top free agents every season and computed the value for GIants safety Landon Collins, considered perhaps the top safety on the market. Using the same method the website did, we can calculate a ballpark value for Amos. Based on the numbers, a contract for Amos is five years, $36,624,611 million, averaging $7,324,922 per season.

With the extended names to hit the market this offseason, including Collins, Earl Thomas, Kenny Vaccaro, George Iloka, Lamarcus Joyner, Tre Boston, and Tyrann Mathieu, combined with the slow safety market of last offseason, maybe the number for Amos would be more affordable for the Chiefs.

Amos was a solid safety with the Bears, capable of helping with rush defense while also helping stop the pass. The 26-year old safety has been a nice safety over the four years he spent with the Bears since entering the league as a fifth round draft pick from Penn State.

With 13 tackles for loss over his career, Amos has proven to be a valuable piece of the Bears defense, one that helped lead the ‘Monsters of the Midway’ to the playoffs and a NFL Division title.

Pro Football Focus has graded Amos very highly with an an 82.7 score in 2018 (graded as the number eight safety) and in 2017 was on their All Pro Team.

The Chiefs could certainly use a player such as Adrian Amos, especially if they are able bring him in on a contract below the market setting numbers that Landon Collins is projected to land and the help of veterans on the market may receive. Amos turns 26 years old this April, which is ideal for a big money free agent as the Chiefs would be paying for his prime years, not investing well into his 30’s and the backside of his career.

Adding a safety in free agency allows the Chiefs to address current and future needs in the draft. If a defense can control and defend the middle of the field, it becomes easier to both stop the run and help in the pass defense. Amos would be a great addition to the Chiefs defense and could be a long term contributor for a team in need of such a talent.
