Kansas City Chiefs: Potential Linebacker Prospects in 2019 NFL Draft
Devin Bush Jr., Michigan
Devin Bush Jr. is an interesting prospect based on his size and speed alone. The 5’11” linebacker is vastly undersized for his position, but it doesn’t stop him from laying some mean hits on ball carriers.
Bush helped anchor one of the nation’s best defenses in 2018, finishing with 66 tackles, 4.5 sacks and four passes defended. He’s been labeled as one of the smarter linebackers in the entire draft class, as he was involved in numerous concepts in Michigan’s run defense.
Where he would fit in nicely for Steve Spagnuolo’s new defense is his ability to shoot the gaps and be disruptive in the backfield. As thedraftnetwork.com states,
"Explosive first step, is a dynamic second level defender who is capable of disrupting behind the line of scrimmage courtesy of blitzes or when stepping to fill vs. a down block. Trusts his speed and can actually get even better and working down into gaps earlier for splash plays."
The Chiefs lacked overall team speed last year on defense and with “Spags” hybrid blitz packages, you could see an undersized guy like Bush making an impact early. His body size and abilities will hinder him in certain areas but in the new age NFL, he could be a really nice fit for Kansas City with one of their second or third round picks.
