Mizzou Football: Ten NFL landing spots for Drew Lock
By Cullen Jekel
New York Giants
Pick: 6
Current Quarterback: Eli Manning
Last year, the Giants had the second overall pick. After Baker Mayfield went first overall to the Browns, the Giants had their choice of the following quarterbacks: USC’s Sam Darnold, Wyoming’s Josh Allen, UCLA’s Josh Rosen, and Louisville’s Lamar Jackson.
Instead, the Giants–under new general manager Dave Gettleman with new head coach Pat Shurmur–went with Penn State running back Saquon Barkley. The idea was to implement Barkley into an offense still led by the aging Manning that had Odell Beckham Jr. out wide and had just been solidified with the signing of left tackle Nate Solder.
While Barkley won Offensive Rookie of the Year, Manning’s decline continued, the Giants went 5-11, and now find themselves right back where they were a year ago: needing to land their next quarterback.
Herein lie several problems for Lock to New York.
First, Shurmur could be coaching for his job in 2019. Before his disappointing debut with the Giants, he went 9-23 as the head coach of the Browns in 2011 and 2012. If he flames out in New York in the same amount of time, most likely there won’t be a third chance. This would mean, then, that if the Giants take a quarterback at pick number six, he won’t be starting next year.
Which leads to this conundrum: with that high of a draft pick, why not pick someone who will make an impact in 2019? And if the Giants are going with Manning, then, obviously, that won’t be a quarterback.
Lastly, barring any trade by teams selecting in the top five of the draft, the Giants would have their pick of whichever quarterback they desired. Would they take Lock over Haskins or Murray?
It’s doubtful. Unless the Giants trade back, don’t expect New York to select Lock (or any other quarterback, if the latest rumor turns out to be true).
