Kansas City Chiefs: How transition to 4-3 affects future of Chiefs defense
The schematic change is a big move that the Kansas City Chiefs have desperately needed to make for the last two seasons.
They haven’t had the personnel to run the 3-4 properly and Bob Sutton’s inability to change or be more creative is ultimately what got him fired.
While Spagnuolo has had up and down numbers in his career, he could be the right man to help change the defense. I was admittedly against the hire at first, but after taking a step back and thinking some things over I realized I need to give him a chance.
Spagnuolo runs a very creative version of the scheme that he learned under the late legendary coordinator Jim Johnson. He also put together one of the best defensive game-plans in NFL history in Super Bowl XLII against the New England Patriots, a team the Chiefs will likely have to beat in the playoffs in 2019.
I mean, after all, “Spags” doesn’t have to be perfect in order for the Chiefs to win it all. He just needs to not be as predictable as Bob Sutton and get this unit to “middle of the road” status.
If the Chiefs make a few solid key acquisitions through the draft and free agency, this team could be REALLY special in 2019 and beyond.
